David G. Stephens established the Frances Layman Redman Memorial Fund for the Spalding Memorial Library at the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers. The purpose of the fund is to support the general operating expenses of the library. This fund was established in December 2007 by Mr. David G. Stephens, a native of Sayre, Pennsylvania now residing in Yorktown, PA, in memory of his aunt, Frances Layman Redman and named it after her.
Mrs. Redman was born in 1909 and lived out her childhood on South Main Street, Athens, Pennsylvania. She was the only child of Dr. Frank Peter Layman and Georgiana Jones Layman. Their home was on the banks of the Chemung River just a few doors down the street from the Tioga Point Museum and Spalding Memorial Library.
Frances married Robert B. Redman of Sayre and resided in the Valley, Binghamton, NY and East Orange, NJ., where she taught school for many years. Upon retiring, she moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she died in 2005. She is buried in the Tioga Point Cemetery beside her husband. An artist’s rendering of the Layman home is on display in the Spalding Memorial Library. Grants from this fund will go to support the role and mission of the Spalding Memorial Library as described by its governing documents.
