First Finkle Rosenburg Scholarship Awarded
At the recommendation of the selection committee of Owego Free Academy (OFA) the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers (CFTT) Board of Directors awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Hannah Barnhart, a 2007 graduate of OFA who will be attending the State University of New York at Oswego to obtain a bachelor degree in Education. This scholarship is available to deserving graduates of OFA who are enrolled in an accredited college or university in the U.S. to pursue a career in education.
Ms. Barnhart was chosen as the first recipient of this scholarship based on her scholastic achievements, her plans to enroll in a program in a field of education and because she has the personal characteristics suitable for an effective career in education. While in high school, she was very active in the Jazz and Concert Bands. She also donated her study hall time to work as a student tutor in a classroom at Owego Elementary School. This work helped to confirm Hannah’s desire to become an educator.
Mrs. Kimberly Hahne, Guidance Chairperson had this to say about the new scholarship. "This scholarship is a wonderful tribute to Finkle Rosenberg who was an exemplary teacher in the Owego Apalachin School District. Our district is very fortunate to have the opportunity to award this scholarship to a senior who will one day be entering the education field. It is my belief that Hannah will carry on Ms. Rosenberg’s legacy by possessing the same passion and commitment to education."
Finkle Rosenberg, a former OFA teacher who taught from 1937 to 1977, established this scholarship fund at the CFTT. She dedicated her life to education and to encouraging young people to fulfill their potential by pursuing further education after high school. During her forty-year career she served as president of the Owego Apalachin Teachers Association, chairperson of the social studies department, and secondary social studies coordinator for the Owego Apalachin school district. She was one of the first honorees on the Owego Apalachin Wall of Fame.
The purpose Ms. Rosenberg had in establishing this scholarship was to help college bound students with their expenses such as tuition, room and board, and books. This scholarship will be awarded every year from now on to an Owego Free Academy graduate who plans to go into the education field.
